From a Distance...

If you were seeing Earth from the moon for the first time, what would be your thoughts? You know the Bette Midler song, "From A Distance?" I recall the first line of that song...
From a distance, the world looks blue and green,
And the snow-capped mountains white
How true those lines are! From here, the earth is just a marble... a glass orb floating in a black sea... And it is beautiful. So beautiful, and so unreal. It's like in the movies... so colorful and so bright. How small the world looks from here! All around us there's this bottomless darkness. It goes on forever and ever, and here we are, just a speck in this cosmos. What makes us think that we are worth anything? Everything we do is less than even a drop in the ocean. Everything goes on around us... planets spin, stars form and die... and we cannot change any of it. We cannot even dream of changing any of it. If a giant asteroid were to sweep by our planet and collilde with it, we would never be able to stop it. We are powerless and useless against the forces of nature. We live. We die. And yet, things go on. I really understand now just how small and insignificant and expendable our lives are.
But... when you look at this miracle that is called earth, how can I not look upon mankind as something wonderful and filled with purpose? How often do you find a planet like ours? One that can sustain life as complex and healthy and productive as the life we see every day! What a rare gift life is, if you look at how seldom it happens! This is something special. And it's not by accident. Not at all. There is a reason we are here, and we have such great potential. This big blue ball we live on is the place where it all can happen. The place where we can create, improve, and enjoy. God has given it to us. Why? Because he loves us that much. We ARE important. In this GIANT, UNDEFINABLY MAGNIFICENT universe, he loves us enough to give us a planet to live on... lives to live. How wonderful it is... looking at earth... to know that this is where God's children live. This is where so much has happened... where so much will happen. This is the place, and there is no other place like it.
God is watching us,
God is watching us,
God is watching us...
From a distance.
